20/20 Captioning offers a simple, effective way to caption your live stream to Facebook Live. We recommend utilizing an RTMP stream.
This method receives your live video stream, provides an audio reference to the captioner using the our encoder, encodes incoming live caption data in the stream, and delivers the fully captioned video to Facebook Live.
As illustrated in the above diagram, 20/20 will provide you with an RTMP address to direct your live stream to. 20/20 will insert live captioning directly into your live stream and send the captioned live stream directly to Facebook Live. Viewers will have the ability to turn captions on and off and the recorded video will have captions embedded for future playback.

Captioning services can be requested with as little as 12 hours notice. Once captioning for your meeting or web conference has been scheduled, you will receive a confirmation of your captioning order, your caption Event ID, and a unique event link to the streaming text window.
To share the link to the caption stream with your meeting attendees, you can paste the unique link from your confirmation email into your meeting invitation. This will be a separate link from the meeting event. Please remind participants that they may need to open two separate website windows at the start of the event: one window for the meeting/conference and another window to display the captions. (Audio conference attendees will only open one website window to view captions.

Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) offers immediate, verbatim, streaming of voice-to-text translation at events, conferences, classes, public hearings and other events. CART/remote CART provides access to these events for deaf and hard of hearing viewers, those for whom English is not their primary language or other attendees who might have difficulty hearing.
Captions can be presented to a single participant on a mobile device, tablet or laptop or on a large screen via a projector for the whole audience.
How does remote CART work?
Remote CART is very simple to use. First, we need to hear what's being said in the classroom or meeting room. This can be done using a Skype session, webinar or a conference line.
Our experienced real-time captioners will "translate" the audio to text in real time using a stenography machine. The text is securely streamed over the internet to a web-enabled computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone where it can be viewed discretely in real time.
As the audio is being captioned, it is displayed in real time in a browser window on a PC, laptop, smartphone or other web-enabled device. Our fully configurable viewing window allows users to format their captioned text for optimum viewing in addition to taking notes and communicating with their captioner in our built in chat window!

The stenotype machine works a bit like a portable word processor, but with a modified, 22-button keyboard in place of the standard qwerty setup. Modern stenotypes have two rows of consonants across the middle, underneath a long number bar. Set in front of these are four vowel keys: "A," "O," "E," and "U."
Stenographers can type entire words all at once by striking multiple keys at the same time. The left hand spells out the beginning of a syllable, while the right hand spells out the end; all keys are pressed at the same time, and the machine produces an alphabet soup that's incomprehensible to anyone who's not trained in machine shorthand. Stenographers spell out syllables phonetically, but there aren't enough keys on each side of the keyboard to cover every sound. Certain combinations of adjacent keys correspond to the missing consonants: For example, there's no "M" anywhere on the keyboard, so you have to press "P" and "H" together to start a syllable with that sound. There is a "B" on the right side of the board, but none on the left—that means it's easy to end a syllable with "B," but for words that begin with "B" you need to hit "P" and "W" together.
Each stenographer might use different conventions to represent homonyms or other ambiguous words. At court-reporting school, you can learn one of at least half a dozen machine shorthand "theories," which teach different approaches and general rules. But any experienced stenographer will work out his or her own abbreviations, especially for words and phrases particular to a given job. "May it please the court," for example, could be shortened to a quick stroke, as could, "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury."In the old days, everything the stenographer typed would print to a roll of narrow paper tape. Later on, the stenographer would translate the notes back to English, and sometimes another stenographer, called a "scopist," would check the translation. Now the translation is done by computer, and the fancier stenotype machines translate as they go. The paper tape still records the original notes, but an LCD display on the machine itself shows the words in regular English.
A stenographer typically saves the spellings and abbreviations he uses into a personal dictionary on his home computer. These personal dictionaries can then be transferred to stenotype machines, most of which have floppy-disk drives or USB ports. Machines can be further customized, down to the sensitivity of each individual key. These changes reflect the relative strength of each finger: The "L" key under the scrawny right ring finger is often made less sensitive, since that finger is more likely to sag and touch the key by accident.
Almost all stenographers have their own customized machines, which they take with them on specific jobs.
If you are an independent contractor working for many companies, you are expected to jump through many technology hoops each day. Technology changes as we sleep so understanding what happens in your office is important.
Wendy is a captioner and just purchased a Windows 8.1 computer. She shared with me the steps she took to setup Skype on her computer. I thought to myself, wow, who would have thought!?!?! I hope you find her instructions helpful:
Windows 8.1 comes with a preinstalled "modern app" version of Skype. Windows 8.1 behaves somewhat like the interface for a tablet or smart phone when using the new Start Page which replaces the Start button / menu in earlier versions. The typical user probably only has one Skype account and so Windows is designed to sync / merge the windows logon account with a single Skype account. While this probably works fine for the typical user, it causes problems for CART providers who need the option of frequently signing into Skype with multiple Skype accounts.
To use the "modern app" like version of Skype that comes preinstalled, the user would need to set up a windows logon account to pair with each and every Skype ID, or alternatively change the windows system settings for Skype each time a different ID were to be used. This is not a practical solution; however, there is a work around.
The user can go to the Skype.com website and select to download the "desktop version" of Skype. The link is labeled "Get Skype for Windows desktop" but do not use the link labeled, "Get Skype of Modern Windows" which is further down the page. The desktop version can be installed and then launched from the old Windows desktop which is still available in Windows 8.1 by pressing the Windows key which toggles between the old familiar Windows desktop and the new Windows 8.1 tiled Start Page.
A problem regarding Skype and realtime text streaming platforms is the Skype Click-to-Call add-on for Internet Explorer. When installing the desktop version of Skype there is checkbox that allows the user to also install the add-on for their web browsers. This checkbox should be cleared; however, if that was not done then it can be enabled / disabled in the internet browser settings. The click-to-call add-in recognizes phone numbers on web pages, including the transcript window on a realtime text streaming platform, and formats the number as a hyperlink so that the user can at-will click on the number to call it through Skype.
While this works great for static pages, it produces less than optimal results in the dynamic environment of the real time text streaming window of 1CapApp. The add-on causes the cursor to jump back and forth in the window after the first time a phone number is recognized. If the text has scrolled more than one page then the entire page jumps up to the last hyperlink and back down to the current cursor position which makes it difficult for the Court Reporter or CART Captioner to follow along in the View window on the realtime text streaming platform 1CapApp. I don't know if the client sees the hyperlink on their end or experiences the jumping cursor. The easiest solution is to just keep the Skype click to call add-on disabled.
I also happen to know that Skype causes the Firefox browser to act up as well so Internet Explorer seems to be the browser of choice with Skype. In Firefox when Skype is open I have observed on multiple computers that the system hourglass gets stuck on.
The steps to disable the add-on in Internet Explorer is as follows:
1. Navigate the Internet Explorer menu bar along this path: Tools menu -> Manage Add-ons -> Toolbars and Extensions.
2. Scroll down to the Skype heading.
3. If present, select the Skype add-on named "Skype Click to Cal for Internet Explorer". In the lower right hand corner of the manage add-ons window there will be a button to disable the add-on.
4. If present, select the second Skype add-on named, "Skype Click to Call settings" and then click the disable button for that add-on as well.
5. Click the close button, and restart the Internet Explorer application.

WebEx Event Captioning is easy with 20/20 Captioning. Follow these instructions below to make your event accessible.
To embed captions directly into your event, follow Steps 1 through 4 below using the “Multimedia Viewer” panel in WebEx and this link, with your unique event link you should have received when captioning was confirmed for your event.
Step 1: When the host of the event begins the session, they first must open the Multimedia Viewer panel. They do this by clicking on the View > Panels > Manage Panels:
Step 2: Here in the “Manage Panels” window, the host will need to move the Multimedia Viewer from the “Available panels” into the “Current panels”:
Step 3: Once the Multimedia Viewer panel is in the Current Panels, the host will need to click Share > Multimedia. This will open a new window and the host will need to copy and paste the embedded link you received from 20/20 Captioning into the URL bar. If you do not have a link, please contact 20/20 Support at 800-870-1795.
Step 4: Once the link is embedded, captions will begin streaming in the Multimedia Viewer panel:
If the host is sharing their desktop in full-screen mode, the host and participants may need to move their mouse to the top of the screen for the dropdown menu, click on the down arrow, and click on the Multimedia Viewer button to see the captions. This will pop up the Multimedia Viewer window and can be moved to any part of the screen that is best for the attendee:
Adobe Connect event captioning is simple with Archive's solution. Follow these instructions below to make your event accessible to all participants:
Step 1: Download the Captioning Pod. There is a ZIP file containing your version of the captioning pod available here:
We suggest you click the link and choose “Save As…” from the menu of options so that you can specify where the file will be downloaded on your computer.
Once downloaded, extract the ZIP file to a temporary folder.
Step 2: Add the Pod to Your Adobe Connect Meeting
Open the Adobe Connect meeting and follow the instructions you find on the website to begin your meeting.
Once your meeting is running, select the following menu item: Pods -> Share -> Add New Share
In the new window, click the dropdown arrow next to Share My Screen and choose “Share Document”:
In the new window, click the “Browse My Computer” button at the bottom left and find the CC pod where it was saved. Double click that file, and the pod will begin to load.
Step 3: Initiate Captioning
Once the pod is loaded, click on the plus (+) icon near the top of the pod. This will activate the menu bar, which provides the connection configuration. The dropdown menu next to Provider is where you will select “Other.”
Click the Connect button to connect to Archive Captioning. Once you are connected, the tab will be updated showing the connection name and a yellow triangle indicating that the connection has been made. BE PATIENT, THIS CAN TAKE A MINUTE.
Check the “Broadcast Captions” checkbox – this allows captions to flow through into the meeting through the captioning pod. The tab will update with a green checkmark indicating that the captions are flowing.
Your meeting is now ready to receive captioning and you may click the “Caption Viewer” tab.

Captioning in YouTube is very straightforward. Just follow these steps to make your next live event more accessible:
1. First, log in to your YouTube account and navigate to the Creator Studio and your Video Manager;
2. Click on Live Streaming and then Events. In the next window, click on New Live Event from These Settings, as below,
3. Complete the basic info tab below. Fill in title, description, private, public, et cetera. Be sure to set the start and end time and time zone.
4. Be sure to Save Changes!

2. Schedule your Zoom Meeting at https://zoom.us/meeting as you normally would in the “My Meetings” tab and click “Save.” This will automatically bring you to the “Manage My Meeting” view of your meeting. Click the “Start this Meeting” button at the top or bottom of this page:
3. Once you’ve clicked “Start this Meeting”, your next screen will look like this:
Click the “Closed Caption” button located in the menu bar at the bottom of the page. In the box that comes up, click the link for "Use 3rd Party CC". A message will come up saying that the link has been copied to your clipboard. Send the resulting website link to 20/20 Captioning when you are scheduling captioning for your meeting.

Captioning services can be requested with as little as 12 hours notice. Once captioning for your meeting or web conference has been scheduled, you will receive a confirmation of your captioning order, your caption Event ID, and a unique event link to the streaming text window.
To share the link to the caption stream with your meeting attendees, you can paste the unique link from your confirmation email into your meeting invitation. This will be a separate link from the meeting event. Please remind participants that they may need to open two separate website windows at the start of the event: one window for the meeting/conference and another window to display the captions. (Audio conference attendees will only open one website window to view captions.

I became interested in captioning when I discovered the little CC button on my TV remote and started seeing the words dancing across my television screen. I was more interested in the words than the television program itself. I immediately connected with a few seasoned captioners and decided to purchase captioning software, start building my captioning dictionary and enter the captioning field. BUT... the captioning software sat in a drawer in my office for close to a year.
I had just begun to provide onsite classroom CART when tragedy hit our country, 9/11. Experienced onsite CART captioners were pulled away from their everyday assignments to provide round-the-clock emergency captioning for television news coverage. This unfortunate emergency allowed me to hone my skills as a CART Captioner as I provided more hours of onsite classroom CART.
I was very comfortable in my role when one day a call came from a captioning company stating their captioner broke her hand and would be off work for three months. Could I please caption an hour and a half show each day until she could return? My heart began to race as I explained to the caller that I had zero captioning experience and I didn't think I was ready. BUT . . . remember that captioning software I purchased a year ago? It was still sitting in the drawer in my office. The company pled with me to take the job for three months and again told me I could quit when she returned. She never did return. I captioned their local news for one and a half years.
I will always be grateful to a captioning colleague, Chris Hime, for her support in helping me through the first month. During the transition I thought to myself, what am I doing here? But Chris assured me that I would eventually become comfortable with captioning, and I did. This opened up opportunities to work with other captioning companies, which I thoroughly enjoyed. So you’d think I would be happy being comfortable?!
Then Chris told me she was working with Jeanette Christian and she asked if she could pass my name to her. I thought, why not? I had no idea that Jeanette would drag me into the 21st Century with all her technology.
I was so comfortable using the older modems and outdated technology but now Jeanette is talking about Skype, GoogleTalk, Google Hangout, Blackboard, Adobe, WebEx -- and now what’s this 1CapApp? What’s this voiceover IP stuff, bridges and platforms? What is remote CART?
What!?!?! You want me to remote CART for a medical student? Hum, maybe that would be all right since 95% of my depos were medical malpractice. What!?!?! Now Jeanette wants me to CART for professionals during their teleconference meetings and maybe voice for them, too -- and in Europe, Asia? Wow!! I really like where this is going.
I was often afraid whenever Jeanette would force me out of my comfort zone, but she is patient and has a great support system in place that I actually find myself saying, "I CAN DO THIS!" CART, Remote CART and Live Captioning Terms and Conditions of Service
1. REQUESTS FOR SERVICE
1.1 Requests should be made to directly to your Business Coordinator. Requests may be made by phone, email, fax or Skype. We can be reached at This email address is being protected from spambots. 1.2 The person requesting service shall provide the following information;
1.3 All requests will be acknowledged (usually by email) within one (1) business day. If an acknowledgement is not received, the requester should contact us immediately.
1.4 The person making the request will be the sole contact person for the request unless a different contact person is assigned by the requester. If the requester is not directly associated with the agency, business, or service responsible for the cost of service, a representative from the applicable agency, business or service will be contacted to confirm service and be notified of the applicable terms.
1.5 Regardless of who initiates the request, the agency, business or service deemed to be the primary provider of service will be responsible for adhering to all CART and Broadcast Captioning Terms and Conditions and applicable rates.
2. SERVICE DELIVERY METHOD
2.1 Captioning service may be delivered through various methods;
2.2 All options will be considered, in consultation with the participants, to determine which methods are viable and which is the most appropriate prior to confirming service.
2.3 Regardless of the service delivery method, all Terms and Conditions of Service will apply.
3. CONFIRMATION OF SERVICES
3.1 Requests will be received and processed by a designated Business Coordinator.
3.2 The Coordinator will confirm receipt of requests, typically within one business day.
3.3 The Coordinator will secure a captionist (subject to availability).
3.4 A confirmation email will be sent by the Coordinator when a captionist is secured. At this point, the event will be considered confirmed and all Terms and Conditions will apply (please note Section 7, Cancellations).
3.5 A subsequent email will be sent to the requester 3 days prior to the event. This email will contain all information regarding the assigned provider and for accessing the caption feed. The requester will be responsible for ensuring all parties needing access receive this information.
4. TECHNICAL & AUDIO CONNECTIONS
4.1 Remote CART, Webinar Captioning, and Broadcast Captioning each rely on audio and internet feeds to relay information in a secure and reliable manner
4.2 Audio can be provided through various means, including, but not limited to: a teleconferencing service, a speakerphone on a land line, a microphone attached to a cell phone, a direct feed from the PA sound system into the phone line, via Skype. A quality audio feed is essential to the delivery of remote CART services.
4.3 CART service is available on most devices, operating systems, and internet browsers (including Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8 or above). Minimum system requirements may be required to access the service. Please ensure that your software and hardware are current and all system updates are installed prior to service delivery date. If you are uncertain if your system can support the service, specific needs can be discussed with the Business Coordinator at the time of placing the request.
4.4 High-speed Internet access (hard-wired preferred) is required to receive the Remote CART or captioning feeds.
4.5 An on-site contact number (either cell phone or land line) is required in case of emergencies or difficulties.
4.6 We strongly encourage new users (or for new connection arrangements) to arrange for testing of their connections and computer set ups. We encourage existing users to allow at least 15 minutes prior to the start of an event to confirm the quality of the audio and the connection.
During a test, all audio and internet connections will be assessed to ensure highest possible quality and, where necessary, provide troubleshooting should an issue be identified. Testing also allows new users an opportunity to become familiar with how remote CART service is provided and accessed, further minimizing any concerns that could arise upon service delivery.
4.7 20/20 WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FAILED AUDIO CONNECTIONS OR REDUCED QUALITY OF SERVICE DUE TO POOR AUDIO OR INTERNET FEEDS. FULL RATES OF SERVICE WILL APPLY REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE CONNECTION FAILS OR IF THE QUALITY OF THE AUDIO. UNDER CERTAIN LIMITED CIRCUMSTANCES, WE MAY WAIVE OR REDUCE CHARGES IF AN EVENT CAN BE RESCHEDULED TO A LATER DATE OR IF THERE ARE OTHER, EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES.
5. PREPARATION TIME AND MATERIAL
5.1 All information and material that can help a captionist prepare for the assignment should be sent to your Business Coordinator at least 3 business days prior to the date of service. Failure to provide suggested material may result in poor caption quality. 20/20 will not be responsible for poor caption quality or other issues caused by a failure to provide adequate preparatory information by the client.
5.2 All materials will remain confidential and will be destroyed or returned.
5.3 Arrangements can be made to send highly sensitive preparation materials directly to the captionist, when necessary.
6. TRANSCRIPTS
6.1 Edited and unedited transcripts are available upon request. Such requests must be made in advance of the session.
6.2 For privacy and confidentiality reasons, transcripts are not stored or saved unless specifically requested by the Client.
6.3 Edited transcripts are available. Editing costs vary by assignment.
6.4 Transcripts provided do not constitute a legal transcript and are provided in order to facilitate communication and accessibility. The transcript provides a written record of the event, but may not be a totally verbatim record of the proceedings. Transcripts may not be used in a court of law.
6.6 Transcripts will only be provided to the agency, business, or service responsible for the cost of service.
6.7 Transcripts are provided in electronic format via email.
7. CANCELLATIONS
7.1 The requester can cancel an appointment at any time by contacting us directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. 7.2 An email confirming the cancellation will be sent to the original requester/designated contact.
7.3 For a confirmed remote CART assignment to be cancelled without charge, written cancellation must be received at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled start time of the assignment, unless otherwise agreed in writing in advance. For example, for a session scheduled for Monday at 3 PM ET, notice of cancellation must be received no later than the prior Friday at 3PM ET.
For a confirmed onsite CART assignment to be cancelled without charge, written cancellation must be received at least 2 business days prior to the scheduled time of the assignment. For example, for an onsite CART session scheduled for Monday at 3 PM ET to be cancelled without charge, notice of cancellation must be received no later than the prior Thursday at 3 PM ET.
For assignments of 6 hours or longer or multiple-day assignments, we may require additional cancellation notice. In these instances, cancellation time frames will be established at the time of confirmation.
7.4 Assignments cancelled without sufficient notice will be billable in full.
8. CONFIDENTIALITY AND SECURITY
8.1 We treat each assignment as confidential.
8.2 The information will only be made available/accessible to the assigned captioning individual/team for the provision of service, management for the purposes of quality control and emergency support, and Accounting services for the purposes of invoicing. Only essential information will be shared with each party.
8.3 All materials related to the assignment will remain confidential and will be destroyed or returned to the assignment participants. Transcripts of assignments are not saved unless a copy is expressly requested in advance. In such a case the transcript is deleted upon confirmation of receipt by the customer.
9. TERMS OF SERVICE
9.1 Minimum Service Requirements: Unless otherwise specified, the following minimum service times apply:
Remote CART/Webinar/Broadcast Captioning: 1 hour
Onsite CART: 3 hours
9.2 Service time: For remote CART Services or Webinar and Broadcast Captioning Services, service time is considered to begin at the time the captionist connects to the audio source and the CART stream becomes active, approximately 5-15 minutes prior to the start time of the event or as previously agreed. Service time ends when the captionist disconnects from the audio source or at the originally scheduled end time of the event, whichever is longer. After the minimum time has elapsed, service time will be billed in 15 minute increments rounded up to the next 15 minute increment.
9.3 Invoices will be sent in accordance with our existing billing terms.
9.4 Payment is required upon receipt or as otherwise agreed in writing. Past due invoices may be subject to additional fees, penalties or costs.
9.5 Invoices will contain the date; time; reference number; and a detailed breakdown of fees.
9.6 If your organization requires a Purchase Order, Department Code or similar identifying code included on the invoice for payment purposes, it is your responsibility to provide such prior to service.
